While a 1NT rebid is often used with 3-card support for responder's suit, it does not necessarily show that.\n\nResponder shows 5+ spades by bidding an unbid minor suit. This is New Minor Forcing and must be alerted.\n\nOpener doesn't have support for responder's major, nor does he have a stopper in the unbid suit (diamonds).\n\nOpener does have 4 of responder's minor suit. Remember that responder's minor suit was an artificial bid and was not suggesting interest in playing in that suit. However, with no other available bid, Opener with 4+ of that minor can bid it in case there happens to be a fit in that suit. Opener is not promising a good suit, only that he has 4+ cards in it.\n\nWith this example hand, it just happens that N/S can make 6!C. That's just a happy little accident, though, and is not to be expected. However, it does illustrate that if the bidding goes this way, responder should know that opener is 5-4 in two suits, so if responder is also unbalanced, there could be an interesting fit with ruffing potential."}
